Brisbane Metro is expanding

Expanding Brisbane Metro will create greater reliability and connectivity of our mass transit network by:

  • delivering high-capacity and high-frequency services
  • connecting key precincts with our suburbs
  • providing more travel options.

Council has secured $50 million of federal funding to support with the expansion of Brisbane Metro bus rapid transit.

What's next?

Council will deliver a rapid business case, in partnership with the Queensland Government.

The rapid business case will confirm alignment, depot locations, network improvements and delivery phasing for new metro routes ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

New and extended metro routes

We're looking to expand metro services to the north, east and south:

  • Southern Metro - CBD to Springwood:  Complementing the extension of the South East Busway to connect to M1 at Eight Mile Plains busway station.
  • Eastern Metro - CBD to Capalaba: Connecting central Brisbane, the eastern suburbs of Brisbane and neighbouring urban areas of Redland City Council.
  • Northern Metro - CBD to Carseldine: Expanding services between central Brisbane and Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside, Aspley and Carseldine.
  • Airport Metro - CBD to Brisbane Airport: Creating new express connections between Brisbane’s international and domestic terminals and the CBD.

Bus rapid transit (BRT) is a best-practice public transport model used by cities around the world using dedicated busways to provide high-frequency bus services that do not intersect with car traffic.

This solution was chosen for Brisbane Metro to maximise the use of Brisbane’s world-class busways and deliver fast, reliable public transport, for now and for the future.
