Infrastructure and construction updates
We're continuing to deliver new and improved infrastructure to support Brisbane Metro services.

Council is delivering upgraded stations, enhanced public spaces and a new tunnel in the CBD to help keep Brisbane moving. Whether you're catching a metro or bus, riding a bike or walking, you have options to get around our city.
Council has partnered with Brisbane Move, comprising construction lead ACCIONA and design lead Arup, to design and deliver new and improved infrastructure to support metro and bus services.

Construction will continue on Adelaide Street until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.
King George Square station
King George Square station is being upgraded to connect to the new Adelaide Street tunnel and features new platform screen doors to support metro services.
Construction works will continue at King George Square station until late 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.
Cultural Centre station is being upgraded to increase capacity at one of Brisbane’s busiest stations and improve travel times and reliability.
An enhanced entrance to the precinct, upgraded bike lanes and wider footpaths will also be delivered as part of these works.
Following the upgrade of platforms 1 and 2, platform 3 will open for buses to West End and Highgate Hill in early June 2025. Learn more.
Works will continue in the precinct until mid 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.
As part of the Brisbane Metro project, Council has converted Victoria Bridge into a pedestrian and active transport bridge. The bridge will include:
- 3 lanes for metros and buses
- a bi-directional cycle path
- wider pedestrian paths.
Construction works will continue on Victoria Bridge until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.
As part of the Brisbane Metro project, we're upgrading some suburban stations, adding end-of-route charging facilities for metro vehicles and new layover facilities.
UQ Lakes station
At The University of Queensland (UQ) St Lucia, we've upgraded UQ Lakes station to increase station capacity and provide end-of-route fast charging for metros. We've also delivered improved pedestrian and cyclist connections between UQ and Eleanor Schonell Bridge.
Buranda busway station
We're upgrading and extending Buranda busway station to improve operations and cater for metro services. We're also delivering:
- new seating
- landscaping
- covered bicycle parking
- locker storage on plaza level.
Construction works will continue at Buranda busway station (including key streets in the surrounding precinct) until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.
Herston fast charging facilities
We've constructed an end-of-route, fast-charging facility and driver layover area within the existing bus layover area at Ernie’s Roundabout, Herston.
Petrie Terrace fast charging facilities
We've constructed an end-of-route, fast-charging facility on the Inner Northern Busway, adjacent to Countess Street, Petrie Terrace.
Griffith University layover
We have constructed a new driver layover facility near Griffith University station, Mt Gravatt, to support metro and bus operations. We have also delivered improved pedestrian connections from the car park to the University.
PA Hospital layover
We’ve constructed a new bus layover facility on the lower level of PA Hospital station, Woolloongabba, to support Brisbane’s future metro and bus service operations. We have also installed traffic signals at the Ipswich Road slip lane to improve safety for all road users.
As part of the Brisbane Metro project, we've constructed a new metro depot at Rochedale to house the electric metro fleet.
This 10-hectare facility provides advanced metro charging solutions for a cleaner and greener Brisbane. It is one of the largest, most technologically advanced facilities of its kind in Australia.

Tiling and column works
From mid March 2025, Brisbane Move will commence tile replacement and column façade works at King George Square bus station.
These works will require temporary changes to bus stops. To minimise impacts on customers and bus operators, tiling works will be staged over 4 consecutive weekends, closing one bus stop/bay per platform at a time.
Following on from the tiling works, Brisbane Move will undertake column façade works for approximately 8 weeks. These works will have no impact on customers or bus operations.
Surface works on Adelaide Street, between George Street and Edward Street, will continue until early 2025. These works will deliver 800 metres of revitalised streetscape in line with Council’s Adelaide Street Vision.
Works include:
- upgrading footpaths and bus stops

- relocating and installing in-ground services.
Works on Adelaide Street will occur out of hours from 7pm to 5am from Sunday to Thursday nights to minimise impact to businesses, pedestrians and public transport users.

Pedestrian and active transport changes
Until early 2025, we'll be doing resurfacing works on Victoria Bridge footpaths and CityLink Cycleway.

Sustainable infrastructure policy
Council is reimagining sustainable transport to create a cleaner and more vibrant city.
We’ve introduced a fleet of electric metros with zero tailpipe emissions – but it’s not just the vehicles that are sustainable. By maximising and upgrading existing busways and stations rather than starting from scratch, we’ve avoided unnecessary works.
Where we are building new, we’re choosing innovative engineering methods and aligning with best-practice industry standards to reduce emissions.
Alongside smart planning and network improvements to reduce congestion, Brisbane Metro is also making it easier to cycle, walk and scoot by upgrading bike lanes and footpaths.
Council is working closely with Brisbane Move to sustainably deliver new and improved infrastructure as part of Brisbane Metro. Download Brisbane Move’s sustainability policy statement.
