Brisbane City Council is delivering new and improved infrastructure to support the introduction of Brisbane Metro services.

Council is delivering upgraded stations, enhanced public spaces and a new tunnel in the CBD to help keep Brisbane moving. Whether you're catching a metro or bus, riding a bike or walking, you have options to get around our city.

Council has partnered with Brisbane Move, comprising construction lead ACCIONA and design lead Arup, to design and deliver new and improved infrastructure to support metro and bus services.

Infrastructure overview

Adelaide Street tunnel

The new Adelaide Street tunnel will provide a dedicated connection between the Inner Northern Busway and South East Busway. Tunnelling works are underway 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with construction continuing until late 2025.

Adelaide Street

As part of Council’s Adelaide Street Vision, Brisbane Metro will deliver a revitalised streetscape on Adelaide Street. Upgrades will include:

  • improved footpaths and bus stops
  • new street furniture
  • feature lighting from North Quay to Edward Street.

These upgrades will improve the environment for pedestrians, businesses and retailers on one of Brisbane’s oldest streets.

King George Square station

King George Square station is being upgraded to connect to the new Adelaide Street tunnel and features new platform screen doors to support metro services.

Construction works will continue at King George Square station until late 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.

Cultural Centre station is being upgraded to increase capacity at one of Brisbane’s busiest stations and improve travel times and reliability.

Cultural Centre station platforms 1 and 2 have been upgraded, with a new platform 3 opening in early 2025.

An enhanced entrance to the precinct, upgraded bike lanes and wider footpaths will also be delivered as part of these works.

Works will continue in the precinct until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.

As part of the Brisbane Metro project, Council has converted Victoria Bridge into a pedestrian and active transport bridge. The bridge will include:

  • 3 lanes for metros and buses
  • a bi-directional cycle path
  • wider pedestrian paths.

As part of the Brisbane Metro project, we're upgrading some suburban stations, adding end-of-route charging facilities for metro vehicles and new layover facilities.

UQ Lakes station

At The University of Queensland (UQ) St Lucia, we've upgraded UQ Lakes station to increase station capacity and provide end-of-route fast charging for metros. We've also delivered improved pedestrian and cyclist connections between UQ and Eleanor Schonell Bridge.

Buranda busway station

We're upgrading and extending Buranda busway station to improve operations and cater for metro services. We're also delivering:

  • new seating
  • landscaping
  • covered bicycle parking
  • locker storage on plaza level.

Construction works will continue at Buranda busway station (including key streets in the surrounding precinct) until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.

Herston fast charging facilities

We've constructed an end-of-route, fast-charging facility and driver layover area within the existing bus layover area at Ernie’s Roundabout, Herston. 

Petrie Terrace fast charging facilities

We've constructed an end-of-route, fast-charging facility on the Inner Northern Busway, adjacent to Countess Street, Petrie Terrace. 

Griffith University layover

We're constructing a driver layover facility near Griffith University station, Mt Gravatt, to support metro and bus operations. Works will continue until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.

PA Hospital layover

We're constructing a new bus layover facility on the lower level of PA Hospital station, Woolloongabba, to support Brisbane’s future metro and bus service operations. Construction works will continue until early 2025. For more information, read our latest construction updates.

As part of the Brisbane Metro project, we've constructed a new metro depot at Rochedale to house the electric metro fleet.

This 10-hectare facility provides advanced metro charging solutions for a cleaner and greener Brisbane. It is one of the largest, most technologically advanced facilities of its kind in Australia.

    Brisbane CBD

    Current Brisbane Metro construction works in the Brisbane CBD include:

    • tunnelling activities beneath Adelaide Street 

    • works on Adelaide Street between George Street and Edward Street 

    • strengthening and resurfacing activities on Victoria Bridge, and the mobilisation of a barge on the Brisbane River 

    • service installation and civil construction activities on the city side of North Quay and William Street between Ann Street and Elizabeth Street.

    Temporary traffic changes are in place until Monday 13 January 2025 at North Quay and Adelaide Street to construct the new Adelaide Street tunnel entrance.

    During these works, the following changes apply.

    • The turning lane from North Quay to Adelaide Street is closed. Motorists are being detoured back along North Quay via a temporary cul-de-sac and onto the Riverside Expressway (southbound).
    • Local precinct access is available to Brisbane Quarter for vehicles travelling on North Quay from Ann Street. onwards.
    • The northbound traffic lane on North Quay and Adelaide Street, from Victoria Bridge to George Street, is closed. 
    • Buses that usually travel on the closed sections of North Quay and Adelaide Street are being detoured.

    Construction works will continue at King George Square station until mid-2025, including works:

    • on Adelaide Street between Brisbane City Hall and the Adelaide Street and Albert Street intersection
    • within the existing King George Square busway station and at platform levels.

    Surface works on Adelaide Street, between George Street and Edward Street, will continue until early 2025. These works will deliver 800 metres of revitalised streetscape in line with Council’s Adelaide Street Vision.

    Works include:

    • upgrading footpaths and bus stops
    • installing new street furniture and lighting
    • relocating and installing in-ground services.

    Works on Adelaide Street will occur out of hours from 7pm to 5am from Sunday to Thursday nights to minimise impact to businesses, pedestrians and public transport users.

    Road resurfacing works and traffic detours

    Road resurfacing works will continue along Adelaide Street, between George Street and Albert Street until early 2025. 

    Changed traffic conditions are required on Adelaide Street between George Street and Edward Street. This section of road may be closed (full road closure) from midnight to 5am with traffic detours and driveway access restrictions in place. 

    Traffic management is on site to provide direction to customers, delivery vehicles, pedestrians and commuters during works.

    Major infrastructure works are underway on Victoria Bridge to support metro and bus services, as well as active transport connections across the Brisbane CBD and South Brisbane. Works include:

    • construction of a new cycleway on the bridge deck
    • resurfacing works
    • strengthening works on and beneath the bridge
    • sewer works.
    Pedestrian and active transport changes 

    Until early 2025, we'll be doing resurfacing works on Victoria Bridge footpaths and CityLink Cycleway.

    To allow these works, temporary pedestrian and active transport changes are required.

    • During cycleway and downstream footpath works either the cycleway or downstream footpath will remain open to allow access across this side of the bridge.
    • A short term closure of the spiral ramp will be required in early 2025 for concreting works.

    South Brisbane

    Current Brisbane Metro construction works in the South Brisbane include:

    • construction of Cultural Centre station permanent platform 3
    • minor finishing works at Cultural Centre station platforms 1 and 2 
    • commissioning of the new lifts at the Queensland Museum forecourt and QPACs Melbourne Street Green and demolition of the old lifts
    • intersection upgrade works on Grey Street and Melbourne Street  
    • urban realm works on Melbourne Street between Edmonstone Street and Grey Street
    • upgrade works to the pedestrian gates at the entrance to the South East Busway on Melbourne Street.

    Cultural Centre station is being upgraded to increase station capacity and support metro services.

    The newly constructed permanent platform 3 (for bus services to West End and Highgate Hill) will become operational in early 2025. Until then, all outbound services will stop at platform 2. 

    Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of works on nearby businesses and residents.

    Lifts

    The new Cultural Centre station lifts are now open.

    Brisbane Move is now:

    • demolishing and removing the old lifts
    • installing services, permanent lighting and signage 
    • constructing paths on Melbourne Street between Grey Street and Victoria Bridge 
    • landscaping.

    To minimise disruptions to the public transport and road networks, there will be intermittent night works.

    Temporary shared user path detours will be in place to facilitate the demolition of the existing Cultural Centre station lifts and construction of the surrounding footpaths.

    Night works and temporary road closures are continuing on Melbourne Street, between Manning Street and Hope Street, until early 2025. They include:

    • intermittent road closures with detours in place 
    • road resurfacing works including profiling and asphalting 
    • line marking activities 
    • construction of bike and pram ramps 
    • installation of centre medians, traffic poles and electrical signaling works. 

    To facilitate these works, intermittent temporary road closures will be in place on Melbourne Street, between Manning Street and Grey Street, from 9pm on Sundays to 5am on Fridays.

    From Sunday 12 January to mid-February 2025 between 7pm and 7am Sunday to Thursday nights, Brisbane Move will deliver road resurfacing works on Grey Street, South Brisbane.

    The following traffic changes will apply during these times.

    • Grey Street will be closed to southbound traffic between Peel Street and Glenelg Street. A detour will be in place via Peel Street, Merivale Street and Glenelg Street.
    • Local access will be available for southbound traffic between Melbourne Street and Glenelg Street.
    • The northbound traffic lane on Grey Street will be open.
    • Fish Lane will be temporarily closed at Grey Street. Detour via Hope Street.

    Traffic control is on site to direct cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles during works. Plan ahead and follow signage.

    Suburban works

    Current Brisbane Metro construction works in Brisbane's suburbs include:

    • upgrades to Buranda busway station and surrounding precinct
    • delivery of a new PA Hospital bus layover facility 
    • delivery of a new Griffith University bus layover facility.

    Construction works continue to upgrade the Buranda busway station.

    The upgrade involves increasing the length of both the inbound and outbound station platforms and widening the busway tunnel under O’Keefe Street. These works should be completed in early 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

    Traffic and pedestrian changes 

    The following footpath and station access changes are in place.

    • Temporary closure of the southern footpath on O'Keefe Street between Gillingham Street and the Pacific Motorway overpass. Access to the Veloway and Regent Street footpath is open. 
    • Pedestrian, cyclist and e-mobility diversions will be in place via the northern footpath. 
    • Access to Buranda busway station will be maintained via the stairs on O'Keefe Street, as well as the stair and ramp access on Gillingham Street. 

    Existing traffic changes on O’Keefe Street, Woolloongabba to remain in place:

    • Eastbound lane closures and traffic detours will be in place. There will be no through access on O’Keefe Street between Carl Street and Gillingham Street.

    • A single westbound lane will remain open on O’Keefe Street between Carl Street and Gillingham Street. 

    • Left turn only will be in place from Carl Street to O'Keefe Street.

    • Left turn only will be in place from Gillingham Street to O'Keefe Street.

    A new bus layover facility is being constructed on the lower level at PA Hospital station, Woolloongabba, to support Brisbane’s future metro and bus service operations.

    Construction commenced Monday 9 September 2024 and is expected to be completed in early 2025, subject to weather and site conditions.  

    Construction activities will include:
    • extending bus layover bays, between Ipswich Road and Kent Street, beneath the Eastern Busway  

    • removal of Translink ‘kiss and ride’ facility on the northern side

    • installation of traffic signals at the Ipswich Road slip lane 

    • updated signage and lighting

    • installation of driver toilet facilities 

    • landscaping and minor vegetation removal.

    A new bus layover facility will be established at Griffith University station, Mt Gravatt to support Brisbane’s future bus service operations. 

    Major construction works commenced in April 2024 and will continue through to early 2025, including:

    • construction of a new bus layover

    • reconfiguration of the South Carpark, with a new entry point 

    • new drivers' facility

    • new pedestrian crossing on Sports Road near the South Carpark

    • installation of in-ground service connections for the new bus layover facility.

    Carpark, pedestrian and traffic changes

    The below parking, pedestrian and traffic changes are in place in the South Carpark and on Sports Road, Mt Gravatt: 

    • new entrance to the South Carpark is open on Sports Road.

    • a section of the South Carpark has permanently closed to accommodate the new bus layover facility.

    • two accessible parking spaces have been relocated within the car park.

    Vehicle and pedestrian access to Griffith University station, Griffith University Tennis Centre and the South Carpark will be maintained. Traffic control and pedestrian diversions will be in place at times.

    Animation: Adelaide Street tunnel

    An animation of the Brisbane Metro’s Adelaide Street tunnel. The new 225-metre-long tunnel will connect the South East Busway and the Inner Northern Busway through the upgraded King George Square station, enhancing the city’s connectivity through improved bus operations.  As part of these works, Council will also deliver  improvements to Adelaide Street, including pedestrian and streetscape upgrades from North Quay to Edward Street, as part of Council’s Adelaide Street Vision.
