We've delivered new and improved infrastructure to support Brisbane Metro services.

Council has delivered upgraded stations, enhanced public spaces and a new tunnel in the CBD to help keep Brisbane moving. Whether you're catching a metro or bus, riding a bike or walking, you have options to get around our city.

Council has partnered with Brisbane Move, comprising construction lead ACCIONA and design lead Arup, to design and deliver new and improved infrastructure to support metro and bus services.

Infrastructure projects

Adelaide Street tunnel

The new Adelaide Street tunnel opened to bus and metro operations on Monday 29 September 2025. The new tunnel provides a dedicated connection between the Inner Northern Busway and South East Busway, addressing congestion bottlenecks in Brisbane's CBD.

Adelaide Street

As part of Council’s Adelaide Street vision, Brisbane Metro has revitalised the streetscape on Adelaide Street between North Quay and Edward Street. Upgrades include:

  • improved footpaths and bus stops
  • new street furniture
  • feature lighting.

These upgrades have improved the environment for pedestrians, businesses and retailers on one of Brisbane’s oldest streets.

Major works are now complete on Adelaide Street with finishing works continuting until October 2025.

City Hall / King George Square station

City Hall / King George Square station has been upgraded to connect to the new Adelaide Street tunnel and features new platform screen doors to support metro services.

Major works at the station are now complete, with finishing works to continue until end of October 2025.

Cultural Centre station has been upgraded to increase capacity at one of Brisbane’s busiest stations and improve travel times and reliability. An additional platform (Platform 3) has opened for buses to West End and Highgate Hill.

Finishing works continue in the precinct.

As part of the Brisbane Metro project, Council has converted Victoria Bridge into a pedestrian and active transport bridge. The bridge now includes:

  • 3 lanes for metros and buses
  • a bi-directional cycle path
  • wider pedestrian paths.

Buranda busway station has been upgraded and extended to improve operations and cater for metro services. We've also delivered:

  • new seating
  • landscaping
  • covered bicycle parking
  • locker storage on plaza level.

Minor works will continue at Buranda busway station throughout October 2025.

Construction updates

Major Brisbane Metro construction activity in South Brisbane, North Quay, the CBD and Buranda is now complete.

New and upgraded infrastructure includes the recently opened Adelaide Street tunnel, which provides a dedicated bus and metro connection between the Inner Northern Busway and South East Busway, addressing congestion bottlenecks in Brisbane's CBD.

The Brisbane Metro project team would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding throughout major construction.

Minor maintenance works will continue in the CBD, South Brisbane and at Buranda busway station throughout October 2025.

    Sustainable infrastructure policy

Council is reimagining sustainable transport to create a cleaner and more vibrant city.

We’ve introduced a fleet of electric metros with zero tailpipe emissions – but it’s not just the vehicles that are sustainable. By maximising and upgrading existing busways and stations rather than starting from scratch, we’ve avoided unnecessary works.

Where we are building new, we’re choosing innovative engineering methods and aligning with best-practice industry standards to reduce emissions.

Alongside smart planning and network improvements to reduce congestion, Brisbane Metro is also making it easier to cycle, walk and scoot by upgrading bike lanes and footpaths.

Council is working closely with Brisbane Move to sustainably deliver new and improved infrastructure as part of Brisbane Metro. Download Brisbane Move’s sustainability policy statement.
